When the magnolias outside my bedroom window start blooming before everything else in my garden each Spring, my thoughts immediately turn to quilts. For years now I have wanted to capture the feeling of those magnolia blooms in an applique project. So Magnolia Creams was born.

An elegant, soft & romantic quilt, this project uses our new Fig & Plum collection of fabrics and is a visual delight. It adds instant beauty whether it is hung instead of art on the wall or draped over your favorite armchair, surely a beauty to add to your collection. Straightforward applique on a simple patchwork background.

"Uguisu"

Plum blossoms, those sweet small white flowers that blow about in the Spring breeze, are a popular mainstay of traditional Japanese art and design. When working on this simple floral applique, I found out that the Uguisu (the Japanese word for a small bird like a lark) is the traditional bird often pictured with those plum blossom paintings,so of course I had to add some of my own Uguisu to the quilt. I think they really completed the plum blossoms & brought that enchanting charm that only beautiful little birds can do.

Straightforward applique on a patchwork background, this quilt can be made with either cottons or wools; this sample is made with a lot of wools for the applique portions for ease & added visual texture.
